Charles Robert Carroll, PH.D., age 91years, of Xenia, OH, passed away May 6, 2026 peacefully at his residence surrounded by his in-home care providers. He was born June 10, 1934. He was the son of Charles A. Carroll and Emma L. Carroll. He was a graduate of the former St Brigid H.S. in Xenia in 1952.
He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at University of Dayton in 1956, earned a Master’s Degree at OSU in 1958, a Doctoral degree at OSU in 1965. He was an assistant professor at OSU then joined the faculty at Ball State University, Muncie Indiana 1967 where he taught in the dept of Physiology & Health Science for 29 years. Retired in 1996 as professor Emeritus. After retirement in 1999 he began a 14-year teaching assignment at the Osher Life Long Learning Institute at UD of Dayton.
During his teaching career he received several awards, including UD of Dayton award of excellence, Ball State University awards: Gerontology, Honors College, Outstanding Faculty Teaching, ETA Sigma Gamma, Outstanding Contributions to Health Science. Distinguished graduate award from St. Brigid Catholic School and an Appreciation award for Church Historian.
1959 Charles was called to active duty in the USAF Reserve serving as a commissioned officer in the Medical Service Corp at Selfridge AFB in Mt Clemons, Michigan. Captain Carroll was honorably discharged July 14th, 1976.
During his retirement Dr Carroll served on the Greene Co. public library Foundation and Country Club Village Condo board of managers. After his retirement he served as coordinator of Adult Faith Foundation program instructor in the RCIS program under the direction of Deacon Dennis Kall.
Charles publications included Drugs and Alcohol in the Modern Society and Health Quackery and the Consumer with Warren Schaller, also an introductory book called Health and Science of Human Adaptation with Dean Miller. He also published the History of St Brigid Parish, History of the Roman Catholic Community of Xenia, Ohio, Coming Together in Christ.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margaret R. Carroll.
He is survived by a cousin, Carole Ann (Donavan) Fischer and her niece Melanie Ann (Donavan) Kay. A special church group of inspiring and supporting friends including James Stewart, Paula Zaino, Dr Jack Zaino, Patricia Neville, David and Rita Ryer, Toby and Jerry Mogenberg, Wyncee Fleisher, Carol Cassidy, Patty Harner. His in-home health care providers: Tina Knisley, Claudette Wheeler, Brenda Debord, Alice Carter, Anna Witosky, Aleta Willett, Brenda Qwens and his special friend Douglas Fitzsimmons PT, and by thousands of former students at OSU, Ball State University and the Osher life-long learning institute at UD of Dayton.
A funeral mass service will take place Friday, May 15, at St Brigid Church, 312 Fairground Rd, Xenia, Ohio from 11:00 to 12:00. Burial will take place at St. Brigid Cemetery on W. Second St, Xenia.
