Obituary

Charles R. "Charlie" McNamee passed away Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Brookdale of Oakwood at the age of 83.  The son of John Robert and Edna Jack McNamee, Charlie was born and raised in Xenia, Ohio, was a member of St. Brigid Church, and a 1952 graduate of St. Brigid High School.  After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, Charlie began a career as a coal and gas operator in Pikeville, KY, which culminated with him becoming an owner and operator of the Continental Coal Sales Corporation in Dayton, Ohio.  Some years after retiring in 1994, Charlie moved with his wife, Charline, to Sun Valley, ID, where they resided for over 20 years before returning to Ohio in 2016.

Charlie was devoted to active participation in numerous philanthropic enterprises.  He served on the University of Notre Dame Engineering Advisory Council, was an Emeritus Trustee of the University of Dayton, was a member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation Samaritan Society, and a regular and generous donor to programs for the homeless, hungry, and abused in the Miami Valley.  Notably, in 1992, Charlie and Charline provided seed money to start the Samaritan Homeless Clinic on Edwin C. Moses Blvd. in Dayton.  Today, the Clinic provides over 1,800 homeless individuals and families with medical, dental and mental health care on an annual basis. Charlie also purchased the land and provided initial capital for construction of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church School in Pikeville, KY.

Charlie will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years, Charline Schofield McNamee, his children, Michael (Cynthia) McNamee of Sugarcreek Twp., Mark (Joy) McNamee of South Bend, IN, Kathleen McNamee of Bellbrook, Charlie (Courtney) McNamee, Jr. of Kettering, and David McNamee of Sugarcreek Twp., his grandchildren, Erin (George) Giles of Harrisburg, PA, Charles Robert McNamee of Seattle, WA, Michael McNamee, Jr. of Moraine, Daniel McNamee of Dayton, Charles Huston McNamee of Cincinnati, Nolan McNamee of Sugarcreek Twp., Abigail McNamee, Hillary McNamee, and Patrick McNamee, all of Indianapolis, IN, Garrett McNamee of Sugarcreek Twp., Chelbie (Tyler) Able of Farmersville, Cody McNamee and Sarah McNamee of Kettering.  He is also survived by eHe Charline's children, Melissa (John David) Lively of Galveston, TX, and Reagan Burch of Austin, TX, and Charline's grandchildren, Amanda (JC) Kauffman of Pinehurst, TX, Jeffrey (Alisa) Lively of Tomball, TX, and Ryan Lively of Houston, TX. Charlie is further survived by a sister, Jean Louise Enxing of Mansfield, MA, two brothers, William (Peggy) McNamee of Xenia, and Gerald "Jerry" (Mary Anne) McNamee of Pikeville, KY, by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and by many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Hugh T. McNamee. Charlie will be remembered as a passionate professional and a compassionate human being, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, June 22, at St. Brigid Church, 312 Fairground Rd., Xenia, with Fr. John Krumm officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. Friday until service time at the church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Brigid Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charlie's memory may be made to the GSH Foundation, 2200 Philadelphia Drive, Suite 500, Dayton, OH, 45406, for the benefit of the Samaritan Homeless Clinic, or to the St. Francis of Assisi Church Building Fund, 137 Bryan Street, Pikeville, KY 41501.
