Charles Wayne
"Chuck" Mailloux
March 1, 1958 – November 18, 2017
Chuck was born on March 1st, 1958 in Lafayette, Indiana to Francis and Pauline Mailloux. The sixth of nine children, Chuck grew up on the family farm in Earl Park where he learned the value of hard work and love of family. During his high school years at Benton Central, Chuck discovered a passion for wrestling, a sport that he both loved and excelled in. It marked his life with a vice grip handshake never to be forgotten. He earned a Civil Engineering degree from Purdue University where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity and became an avid Boilermaker. In 1981, Chuck joined the fulltime staff of Cru (formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ) – a college ministry God used to point him to Jesus and impact his life forever. He began his career at San Diego State University where he met a beautiful girl in red pants, Marilyn Jean Morrison.
The rest was history. Chuck married Marilyn on May 18th, 1985 and they moved back to the Midwest where they ministered together on multiple college campuses and raised their family in St. Cloud, Minnesota where Chuck was the Cru Campus Director at St. Cloud State University. During this time, Chuck shared his heart for God by investing into the lives of many, many college students. Chuck's life was best exemplified by the Apostle Paul's words, "Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well." (1 Thessalonians 2:8). In his years in St. Cloud, Chuck enjoyed being a part of many rich relationships both at Calvary Community Church and within the community. His love of theology and the scriptures inspired him to earn his Masters of Divinity at Bethel Seminary in 2001. After earning his degree, Chuck worked in the regional office of Cru in Minneapolis training and developing campus staff. In 2010 Chuck continued his life calling in Xenia, Ohio where he had the opportunity to blend his love of Christ and sports with the ministry of Athletes in Action as their leadership development guru.
Family was everything to Chuck. He was there for his boy - playing catch, coaching wrestling, and tucking him in every night. He modeled integrity. He loved his son fiercely yet never let him win in a wrestling match. Chuck delighted in his daughters. He wrestled them, held them, kissed them and danced with them. He painted nails, did hair, and cheered them on in choir concerts and musicals, soccer, lacrosse and track -- an amazing combination of tough and tender. He gave his children the complete assurance of his unwavering love, a gift they will forever carry as they make their way through the world. As his kids left the nest a bone crushing bear hug always awaited them at home followed by the question, "how is your car running?". For his soulmate Marilyn, Chuck was a great listener, life processer, best friend and always had her back. He knew that together they were a great team!
As anyone who knew him knows, Chuck was incredibly strong. He was short in stature, but his laugh distinguished him in a crowd and he was never afraid to take on someone twice his size. He had a wrestler's heart and a will to fight. He was thoughtful and cared well for people's needs. He was a father and a brother to many beyond his family. Well loved. Well respected. Honest and hard working. He brought restoration to people and problems. Relentless in all he pursued.
Chuck was a man of God's Word, learning to memorize scripture on long runs in college, and quoting it even when his memory failed. He knew the scripture, believed it, walked it, and allowed the gospel to transform his life. Chuck left an incredible legacy. Strong to his very last breath, Chuck fought the good fight. He finished the race. He kept the faith.
