Charles Edward "Eddie " Hawkins, 88 of Xenia, OH passed away of natural causes on Saturday, December 19,2020, surrounded by his family.
Eddie was born to Charles Kenneth and Martha (Johnson) Hawkins on February 1, 1932 at their farm in Beavercreek Twp., OH. He was a 1950 graduate of Beavercreek High School, where he excelled in football, basketball and track. He was also class president. Eddie held the state record for the mile in high school track, setting the record in 1949 and taking first place in 1950. He was awarded his medal by Olympian Jesse Owens. He was inducted into the Beavercreek Athletic Hall of Fame.
Eddie was a lifelong grain and livestock farmer on the family farm on Hawkins Rd. He and his high school sweetheart Barbara Gayle Glore were married for 41 years and raised 4 children there: Gayle Ann (Mark) Hartman, Charles Keith (Barbara Downey), Judy Lynn (Franz) Seiter and James Edward "Jamie" (Cheryl "Peach"Lovett ) Hawkins. They were married July 14, 1951. She preceded him in death on May 15, 1993.
Eddie was active in Greene County 4-H and FFA as both a member and advisor. He and Barb spent over 25 years a s advisors for the B&B Dairy, later B&B U-Name It 4-H Club . They raised sheep and were members of the Ohio Wool Growers Association. He also helped start the FFA Alumni Association for Greene County.
He was a member of the Mt Zion UCC, in Beavercreek, serving as a Deacon Elder and President of the Consistory. He helped build and provided the livestock for the live Nativity scene for many years.
Eddie was a member of the Xenia Township North Fire Department, serving as a firefighter and later as Fire Chief. (1967-1979) He was instrumental in the Township's purchase of their first, custom built, Mack fire engine as well as the construction of the current fire station in Oldtown.
Eddie served on the Beef Committee with the Greene County Agricultural Society from 1970-1992.
He was also a member of the Old Timers Club, collecting Massey Harris tractors and other antique farm equipment.
He was p receded in death by his parents , his first wife Barbara, s ister and brother-in-law Barbara & Ralph Mallow and brother-in-law William 'Bill" Struewing.
He is survived by his second wife, of 25 years, Dewanda Stickle Hawkins, who he married December 15, 1995, his sisters Mary Elizabeth Struewing, Joanne (Russell) Crouse, his 4 children and their spouses, his grandchildren; Davis (Angela) Hawkins, Jessica ( Daryle) Williams. Edward James (Jordan) Hawkins, JoAnna (Mike ) Seiter-Tse, William (Heide ) Hawkins, Marcus (Amanda ) Hartman, Molly (Chad) Babcock, Elizabeth (Eric) Clawson, Angela (Kyle ) Wood, Sarah (Christopher ) George and Lucas (Brittany ) Hawkins.
Great-Grandchildren- Ryann Hawkins, Nicolas St. Clair, Sydnee Hawkins, Matthew Williams, Casen Hawkins, Ellie Babcock, Bailey Hawkins, Daniel Edward Williams, Maggie Babcock, Ally & Avery Hawkins, Chance Babcock, Hadley Hawkins, Adah Hawkins, Mackenzie Hartman, Clara Jo Hawkins, Cary George and Mollie Hartman.
Step- Children and their spouses: Melvin (Kathy) Stickle, Steven ( Belinda) Stickle, Robert Stickle, Joseph (Brenda ) Stickle, Sherry (Ron ) Dickerson, Michael Stickle and Charles "Chuck " Stickle.
Private graveside services will be held by the family at Woodland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Miami Valley.
