David Lee Matson of Cedarville, OH passed away at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday January 12 th , 2022, at 82 years of age.
David was born on June 8 th , 1939 in Plymouth, Indiana, to Harley David and Mable Fern Matson. After graduating from high school at the age of sixteen, he was accepted to the prestigious College of Engineering at Notre Dame University. After one successful year he felt the Lord calling him into Music. He transferred to Cedarville College in Cedarville, OH. He graduated from Cedarville College in 1960 and later received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1978. After graduating from Cedarville College, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Ann Oyler on September 9 th , 1960. David then accepted a position as minister of youth and minister of music at a church in Waterloo, Iowa. After 5 years he returned to Cedarville College as a professor in the music department. He spent 44 years positively impacting the lives of students. With the baritone voice he possessed, he also spent many years doing radio work and as "the Voice of The Yellow Jackets". He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Cedarville for forty-six years, seventeen of those as the minister of music. After retirement he loved building memories with his family and spending winters in the warmth of Florida. Most of all, David was a faithful follower of the Jesus he so loved and a faithful prayer warrior for anyone that entrusted their cares and worries to him.
David was preceded in death by his parents, H. David and Mable F. Matson, his only sister, Sharron Lea Matson and one son-in-law, Stefan A. Tarapchak.
David is survived by his loving wife of almost sixty-two years, Rebecca Ann (Oyler) Matson, sons and daughters, James David & Debra Matson and Sharon Kay (Matson) & Michael Eckstein and Sandra Jo (Matson) Tarapchak along with Scott (wife Jamie) and Steven (wife Kim) Matson. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and four nieces.
Visitation will be held from 4-7pm, Friday, January 21, at Grace Baptist Church, Cedarville. Services will be held at 10am Saturday at the church. Interment will be in North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Excellence in Music Research Award, c/o Cedarville University, 251 N. Main St., Cedarville, OH, 45314, in David's memory.
