Obituary

Dr. Doris J. Purdom died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 10, 2014. She was born on August 24, 1928 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Her parents, Benjamin and Lena Williams preceded her in death. Three sisters, Carrie Fillenworth, Marian Ohnezeit, Nell Frankhouser and three brothers, Philip, Raymond, and Leonard also preceded her in death. Dr. Purdom is survived by two children, Pamela Purdom of Powell, Ohio and Jeffrey Purdom of Worthington, Ohio and special friend Jennifer Warner. Dr. Purdom was the first woman serving in the Greene County School district to receive her Ph.D. Early in her career she taught English and Speech at Xenia High School. Following graduate work she was hired by Superintendent Robert Peters to develop a program for children with learning disabilities in all seven school districts in Greene County. She then founded the Greene County Learning Center, a collaborative endeavor of the community mental health program and the schools for children with emotional and behavioral problems. She served a total of 38 years in the public school system. Dr. Purdom also taught at the University of Dayton. Dr. Purdom has been a member of the American Psychological Association, Ohio Psychological Association, National Education Association, Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, Council for Exceptional Children and The Association for Retarded Citizens. She was a charter member of the Community Mental Health Board and the League of Women Voters in Xenia, Ohio. She is a current member of the Beavercreek Women's Club. She is an active member of Memorial United Presbyterian Church where she has served as an Elder. Dr. Purdom played the flute in the New Horizons Band at the University of Dayton. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Thursday, June 12, at Memorial United Presbyterian Church, Xenia, with Pastor Kelley Shin officiating.
