Obituary

Dorothy L. "Dottie" Shaw, 93, of Xenia, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Ohio's Hospice of Dayton. She was born December 31, 1931, in Xenia, Ohio, the daughter of Charles Timothy and Anna E. Moore Atkinson. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Xenia, and was the former Greene County Auditor.

Dot served as great example to relatives and friends.  Her strong work ethic was developed by her years growing up on the family farm.  She was no stranger to feeding chickens, milking cows, driving the tractor and doing the  necessary work required on the farm.  In school, she was an excellent athlete as well as involved in the class play and student government.

Dot's work in the Greene County Auditor's office began  at age 17, while she was still a senior at Xenia Central High School, back in April 1949.  She was appointed to the position of auditor in 1969 after effectively running the office since 1965 when the former auditor suffered a stroke.  Dottie won her first election in 1970 and served as the county's longest-running office holder until announcing her retirement after 41 years of service.  The Auditors office is always considered to be one of the most responsible elected jobs the county offers.  The day of her retirement was officially proclaimed as the Dorothy L. Shaw Day by the Greene County Commissioners.   Notably, she was one of the first women to break into the position of authority in a field dominated by men.  A true trailblazer.  During her tenure she achieved several awards and recognitions such as being inducted into the Greene County Women's Hall of Fame. She relished and excelled at fulfilling the responsibilities of her position.

After retirement in 1990, Dottie enjoyed many community activities both social and athletic.  She participated in various card clubs and could always be found on the golf course with her husband as well as playing competitively in several golf leagues.

Dot left her mark on the community, her friends and importantly her nieces and nephews. Her large family was her focus and the annual reunions were a highlight to her.  Her absence going forward will be a huge loss.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and by many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Shaw, Jr, on May 12, 2008, five sisters, Eula Tshudi, Elizabeth Duncan, Mary Cochran, Pauline Atkinson and Vivian DeVoe, and by six brothers, Herbert Atkinson, Charles L. Atkinson Thomas E. Atkinson, William Atkinson,  Paul Atkinson and Larry Atkinson. Dottie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Services will be held at 11am, Thursday, August 14, at NeeldFuneral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Visitation will be held from 10am Thursday, until service time. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church, 287 W. Main St., Xenia, OH, 45385, in her memory.
