Eugene W. Helgeson, 94, of Xenia, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015, at Greene Oaks Health Center. He was born May 24, 1921, in Viroqua, Wisconsin, the son of Eugene and Gladys Waldron Helgeson. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. He retired after 38 years of service as a civilian electronics engineer at WPAFB. He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years Marcella J. (Rutherford) Helgeson, whom he married, August 6, 1949, by four sons, David (Sandy) Helgeson, Indian Lake, OH, Steven Helgeson, Olympia, WA, Christopher (Jeanne) Helgeson, Norwalk, OH and Jerry (Bobbi Ann) Helgeson, Lancaster, SC. Eugene is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and by close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a sister, Sharon Olson. A father of 4 sons Gene was involved in Boy Scouts and Indian Guides, Xenia High School Athletic Boosters, the local bowling league, golf league and was a proud member of the Old Crows" WWII engineer club. Gene was an avid baseball fan and while an original Cubs fan he leaned towards the Reds later in life having moved to Ohio. "Gene" was an avid golfer and enjoyed the weekly league play at the Xenia Country Club. He was a sailboat builder by hobby and taught all four boys the art and fun of sailing on Cowan Lake. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew and loved him. Memorial services will be held at 4pm, Saturday, July 11, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, with Rev. Rick Tettau officiating. Visitation will be held from 3pm Saturday, until service time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Miami Valley, 46 N.
