Rev. Isaac J. "Ike" Flora, 91, of Xenia, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, November 13, 2017, at Greene Memorial Hospital. He was born October 3, 1926, in a four-room house with no running water or electricity, in Buzzard Roost, Kentucky (Nicholas County), the son of Tommie and Ethel Crump Flora. He attended a one room school in Upper Blue Licks, Kentucky for seven years. He attended Carlisle High School from 1940-45, and was active in FFA, hopeful to be a farmer, like his father, someday. He was drafted into the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II, seeing action on Okinawa, the Marianas Islands, Guam and Shantung Province of China. Discharged in 1946, he became active in Mt. Zion Christian Church, KY, and during a revival service, went forward to become a minister. He graduated from the United Television Laboratories in Louisville in 1946 and Kentucky Christian College, in Grayson, in 1950. While in college, a girl from Waco, KY, Faye Cole, stole his heart and they were married June 17, 1951. In 1953, he was pastor at Beaverdam Christian Church, and later served in churches in Smith's Grove, Oakland, and Louisville, KY. Coming to Xenia, Ohio in August 1963, to answer the call to the First Church of Christ, he went on to found North Side Christian Church (1964) and served as senior pastor until 1996, overseeing the Senior Adult Ministry and Mission Ministry until 2012. In his many years of preaching, his ministry has touched the lives of thousands from every church denomination, every economic and social strata…millionaires or a person without a second pair of shoes. He was a former member of the Greene County Council on Aging and the Overlook Committee for the Greene County Board of Commissioners. For years he led Bible Study at the Golden Age Senior Citizens Center (XARSC), and was a supply minister for churches throughout the Miami Valley. He was a former trustee at Mason Christian Retirement Village and the Continuation Committee for the School of Ministry at Milligan College near Johnson City, TN. According to Ike, his greatest joy has been seeing transformed lives through the Gospel. He is survived by his children, Sandra Flora, Xenia; Cheryl (David) Bickel, Maineville; Carolyn (Tom) Caraway, Watauga, TN; and Michael (Mary) Flora, Bridgeton, NJ; six grandchildren, Nathan (Holly) Flora, Sharla (Tim) Chinniah, Jonathan (Katie) Bickel, Sharaya (Mike) Sisk, Isaac (Sarah) Caraway, and Josiah Caraway, one chosen grandson, George Keralis, four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Flora, Kate Flora, Analise Chinniah, and Joshua Chinniah, a sister-in-law, Rhetta Parrish, Dallas, TX, by several nieces and nephews, kindred family Dave and Kay Scott, and by many close friends.
