Obituary

John J. Hobson, 96, of Xenia, Ohio, died May 10, 2023, at Hospice of Dayton. John will be cremated and his remains placed in the columbarium at the US Naval Academy (Annapolis, Maryland) next to his first wife, Marie Hobson, at a later date. John was born in Vincennes, Indiana on April 16, 1927. His father was the late John W. Hobson and his mother the late Griffie Denton Hobson. John graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1956 and was subsequently commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF. John retired from the USAF as a Colonel in 1972. From 1972 until 1983 John was head of the Air Force Junior ROTC department at Apollo High School, Owensboro, KY. From 1983 to 1995 John served as an adjunct professor in the math department at Troy State University (Alabama). In 1995 John began work as a part-time math tutor at Hopkinsville Community College (Kentucky). John was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hopkinsville, KY. In the last several years of John's life he whittled walking sticks, sold for donations, which inspired donations of over $27,000 to a food pantry in Xenia, Ohio. This led to Xenia's mayor honoring John's achievement by proclaiming April 16, 2021, "John Hobson Day". John is survived by his wife, Betty Hobson (Hopkinsville, KY) and four sons: Dr. Jeff Hobson (Rocio) South Haven, Michigan; Dr. Bob Hobson (Marilyn) Hopkinsville, KY; Randy Hobson (Jude) Lecanto, Florida and Colonel Mark Hobson, retired (Joy) Xenia, Ohio. John also has a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was a wonderful man who touched many lives.  Condolences may be made to the family at www.NeeldFuneralHome.com.
