Joyce Ann (Lewis) Combs, 92, of Xenia, passed away quietly, surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Greene Memorial Hospital. She was born January 13, 1931, in Breathitt County, Kentucky, the daughter of Calvin W. and Minerva Hensley Lewis, She was the youngest and last surviving of 12 siblings. She was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, and was a  teacher with Xenia schools at Spring Valley, Simon Kenton, and McKinley elementary schools between 1963-1991. Joyce was good at many things. Her sewing skills led to her winning a first place blue ribbon at the Greene County Fair, for a rug she created from scratch. She had beautiful handwriting and was an artist at wrapping Christmas presents. She was also a cook without peers. She and her husband travelled the world, from Ireland to Israel, and from Key West to Hawaii. She is survived by a daughter, Laura Howson, two sons Steve (Sheri D.) Combs and Jeff (Karin) Combs, two grandchildren, Katlyn Combs and Kyle Combs, a step granddaughter, Ann Ulerick, two great-grandsons, Krew and Jacoby, sister-in-laws, Patsy Lewis, Helen Haddix and Margaret Hubbard, and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lloyd Combs, on November 8, 2022, a son-in-law, Robert Howson, and by six sisters and five brothers. Joyce was kind, unselfish and generous, never putting herself first and always offering a friendly, reassuring smile

Joyce will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She and her husband came to Xenia in the early 1960s with next to no resources and through hard work and perseverance, built a considerable life for their family. Services will be held at 11am, Thursday, December 7, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St. Visitation will be held from 10am Thursday until service time.
