Lawrence Edward Welsh, Larry or "Dutch" passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2019 at
Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center with his family by his side. Larry was 79 years old.
Larry graduated from Xenia High School in 1957 then went on to attend the United States
Military Academy at West Point, graduating in June of 1961. He was deployed to Vietnam in
1964, serving in the 173rd Airborne Brigade as Battery Commander. During the years
1965-1966, while attending infantry school at Fort Benning, he met and married Rosemary
Garvey. In 1968 Larry was again deployed to Vietnam, assigned to 108th Artillery Group. During
the years 1973-1977, Larry was assigned the position of Staff Officer at US Army Europe,
responsible for developing policy for surety of nuclear weapons in Europe and was promoted to
Lieutenant Colonel. Larry retired from the military in 1981.
During his military career, Larry received a Master's degree in Mathematics from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute and went on to teach at the US Military Academy. Following his retirement
from the Army Larry continued his career as a Professor of Mathematics at Lees-McRae
College in Banner Elk, North Carolina and San Juan College in New Mexico.
Larry's life, family and career are celebrated by his loving family. He is survived by his wife
Rosemary, their three children, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and dog Cooper.
Larry will be inurned at his beloved West Point. Condolences may be made to the family at
