Robert Earl Smith, age 92, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015, in Jamestown, Ohio. Born February 9th, 1922, in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of Earl Edwin & Ruth Elizabeth Coldron Smith. He graduated from Rayen High School in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1941. He worked at Youngstown Sheet & Tube until being drafted into the United States Army on October 6, 1942. Robert served in Troop C. 88th cavalry squadron, 8th armored division, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged on January 23, 1946. Mr. Smith received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Wilmington College in 1949. Robert taught Science & Math at Jefferson Township School in Bowersville, Ohio, and Biology at London High School in London, Ohio. He was loved by his students and kept in touch with their achievements through the years. While teaching, he received several National Science Foundation Scholarships to Indiana University, Oklahoma State University, and Florida State University. Robert did graduate work at the Ohio State University. He was a past President of the Xenia Lions Club, and a member of the Kettering V.F.W. He loved music, ballroom dancing, golfing, and most especially watching Ohio State football with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard & sister-in-law Kathryn, his second wife Irma Douglas Laywell Smith Armbrust. He is survived by his first wife & mother of their children Lois Maxene McClellan of New Bern, North Carolina, daughter Roberta (Daniel) Sanders & granddaughter Marie of Lake Jackson, Texas, son Roderic (Melissa) Smith of Jamestown, grandchildren David (Brandi)Smith of Jamestown, Jonathan (Megan) Smith also of Jamestown, Molly (Brandon) Davis of Kettering, great-grandchildren Addison, Gabriel, Elijah, Layla, Luke Smith & McKenzie Davis, step-children Betty (Gary)Douglas Rhoden Londergan of Hilliard, Ohio, William Douglas Jr. of Tampa, Florida, step-grandchildren Kelly (Matt) Clark, Tom (Aimee) Rhoden, Dawn (Travis) Schell, Spring (Brent) Simpson, 14 step great-grandchildren, third wife Marilyn Stocker of Newark, Ohio, step-children Dana and Kent. Services will be held 12 noon, Monday, January 19th, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, with Pastor Kenneth Martin (OldTown United Methodist Church) officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00am Monday, until service time. Burial will be at the Silvercreek Township II Cemetery.
