Roxie Irene Marcum Gross, 83, of Beavercreek, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Hospice of Dayton. She was born February 17, 1934, in Estill County, KY, the daughter of Carlton Hobert and Edna Mae Finney Marcum. Roxie greatly valued education and graduated from Estill County High School in 1953, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1969 from Central State University, and a Master of Education in 1987 from Wright State University. She devoted her career to teaching and retired in 2001 from Greeneview Local School District after 30 years. She was a very talented gardener, cook, and artist. She also enjoyed reading and sewing and was a member of Alpha Baptist Church.
Roxie is survived by: her children, Emma (Mike) Ross, Beavercreek Twp., and Tom (Blanche) Gross, Xenia; four grandchildren, Dr. John (Erin) Ross, Danville, PA, Hanna (Mike) Minges, Springboro, Jeanne (Daniel) O'Callaghan, Xenia, and Max Gross, Sacramento, CA; seven great-grandchildren, Brenna, Ava, Lila, Tessa, Danny, Seamus, Cora, with another on the way; two sisters, Ruth (Earl) Sumner, Strasberg, CO, and Virginia Carol Tyree, Richmond, KY; two brothers, Boyd (Helen) Marcum, Donnelsville, Arthur (Mary Lou) Marcum, East Bernstad, KY; and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends, including special neighbors Michelle and Kelly Ammon, and their children, Miranda and Bradley. She was preceded in death by her parents, and in 2014, by her beloved husband, John E. Gross. Roxie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services will be held at 10am, Friday, July 7, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St. Xenia, with Ben Chilcote officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm Thursday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Valley View Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Children's Dyslexic Center of Dayton, 525 W. Riverview Ave., Dayton, OH, 45401.
