Russell T. Berwanger, 92, of Xenia, passed away Wednesday, March 25, in Springfield, Ohio. He was born September 1, 1922, in Blanchester, Ohio, the son of Albert and Goldie Rohmor Berwanger. He was a member of St. Brigid Church and retired as an engineer with Conrail in 1982. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a locomotive engineer during World War II and was active in the SOXOS Chapter #729, railroad veterans of World War II. He is survived by a daughter, Darcy Susan Cost, Springfield, three grandchildren, Lisa (Steve) Glass, who were Russell's caregivers the past month, Gary Cost II, and Angela Neal, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, a sister, Mary Lou Berwanger, Cincinnati, a brother-in-law, Jack Busby, Xenia, by several nieces and nephews, including a special niece Jo Ellen Schardt, Xenia, and by many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ellen M. (Ary) Berwanger, on July 12, 2003, by a sister, and by three brothers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am, Friday, March 27, at St. Brigid Church, 312 Fairground Rd., Xenia, with Rev. John Krumm officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30am Friday at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia.
