Obituary

Russell A. Pickering, 96, made his journey home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 2, 2018.  He was born on March 15, 1922, the eldest son of Roy and Reva Pickering.  He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Doris Pickering; a brother Richard; two sisters Martha and Dorothy and sons-in-law Michael Perkins and Earle Thwaites.

He is survived by his wife Mary Jones Pickering.  He is also survived by one sister, Patricia Wilson; three children: Floyd (Mary) Pickering, Linda Perkins and Mary Jane Thwaites; two grandchildren: Pamela Perkins and Brett (Jeannine) Perkins and two great-grandchildren: Zack (fiancée Mae) Perkins and Ashley Perkins; along with multiple nieces and nephews.

Russell served as superintendent and treasurer of the Paintersville United Methodist Church for over 60 years and a Caesarcreek Township Trustee. He served in the US Army in WWII and participated in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. for his military service.

Russell was a farmer for over 40 years, with Doris at his side.  He was always active and was an avid golfer achieving a hole-in-one on his 88th birthday.  Fishing, softball and bowling were also some of his favorite activities.

Russell was known for his kindness, patience and compassion. He always had a positive outlook towards life and would always find the best in the worst situations.  He never spoke an unkind word about anyone and would help anyone in need.  He was an inspiration and a true blessing to all who knew and loved him.

Services will be held at 2pm, Monday, May 7, at Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, with Chaplain Steve Wetterhan officiating.  Visitation will be held from 1pm Monday, until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bowersville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ohio's Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH, 45420, in his memory.  Condolences may be made to the family at www.NeeldFuneralHome.com .
