Thomas E. Welsh, 87, of Beavercreek, formerly of Xenia, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at Ohio's Hospice of Dayton. He was born July 3, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Elmer Charles and Gladys Ester Unger Welsh. His family moved to Xenia in 1937 and Tom attended Xenia Central High School. He played on the 1952 championship golf team, was elected to the National Honor Society, graduate in 1952, and enrolled at Ohio University in 1952. He graduated in 1956 with a BSC, member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and steward for two years. He was a member of the OU golf team and in May 1956 made the final putt on the final hole that allowed OU to beat OSU for the first time in their match play history. June 1956, he went to work in Xenia for Dallas Marshall, as a real estate salesman. December 31, 1957, he married Gail Nichol and had four children, Keith, Debbie, Mike and Chip. He became a real estate broker in 1958 and opened his office in Xenia. Tom studied property appraising at Texas Tech, University of Dayton, University of Wisconsin, Michigan State University, and earned the Senior Residential Appraiser Designation, MBA, and attended Wright State University. He was a member of Xenia's first Human Rights Commission and played a major role in Xenia passing an anti-discrimination ordinance. He was elected to two terms to the Xenia City Commission as a result of the April 1974 tornado. He resigned in May of 1974, because of a conflict of interest with so much property to be restored and zoned. He was a member of the Crisis Center Board, Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Chair of the American Cancer Society, Vice President of Finance for the Tecumseh Council of the Boys Scouts of America, one of the founders and President of Greene Country Club, won several club championships at Greene Country Club, author of the Kermit Blosser Foundation, his golf coach at OU, which raised enough capital for the golf team to be self-sustaining. He had memberships in Xenia Jaycees, where he received the Jaycee Man of the Year in 1958, Xenia Kiwanis Club, Rotary Clubs of Xenia and Beavercreek and the Dayton Racquet Club and Five Seasons and attended Grace United Methodist Church, Xenia Masonic Lodge # 49, F. & A.M., York Rite, and Antioch Shrine. Formerly taught 4 th , 5 th , and 6 th grades at Trinity Methodist and chair of the official board and trustee of Trinity Methodist Church and was on the merger committee, when First Methodist and Trinity became Faith Community United Methodist Church. He played a major role in the site acquisition of FCUM. He also, hired the architect. He is now a member of Grace United Methodist Church and conducted Monday evening pickup basketball games for several years. He was elected to two terms, as president of the Greene County Board of Realtors, builder and remodeled over 300 homes, built six residential subdivisions, testified, as an expert in real estate matters in Greene County Common Pleas Court, Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, Dayton Municipal Court and Cincinnati and Dayton Federal Courts and Federal Bankruptcy Court in Dayton. He was the author of three novels, short stories and poetry. Tom will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.
