Wendell W. Cultice, 94, of Xenia, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Hospice of Dayton. Born May 22, 1922, in Xenia, Ohio, he was the son of Walter and Hilda Mullen Cultice. Following his graduation from Xenia Central High School, where he received state honors in vocational agriculture and athletics, "Butch" obtained three degrees from Bowling Green State University. An educator for more than five decades, he served as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Concurrently, he served on numerous local, state, and national committees associated with youth. He was president of the Alaska High School Activities Association that introduced football to the 49th state in 1970. A frequent contributor to professional journals, he served on the Advisory Board of the National Association of Secondary School Principals' Committee on Publications and was the founder and first editor of the Alaska State High School Principal's Newsletter. An historian, he was a recognized authority and actively engaged in the movement to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 serving as a consultant to several publishers, including
Teen
magazine. He testified before Suffrage Committees in several states and eventually authored
Youth's Battle for the Ballot: a History of the
Voting Age in America
, the first complete work on the issue. After publishing his first article in the
Christian Science Monitor
in the late 50's, he went on to author nearly a dozen books. A four-year U. S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a commander of Foody-Cornwell American Legion Post # 95 and president of the Xenia Kiwanis Club. He was a life member of the National Education Association, Kiwanis International, and the American Legion. Wendell's life epitomized a lifetime commitment to the service of others. A people person, he had the ability to communicate and work with individuals of all ages from all walks of life. His name is engraved on the "Walk of Stars" at Bowling Green State University (1994); he was inducted into the Xenia Educational Endowment Hall of Honor (2009); and into the Xenia Community Athletic Hall of Fame (2011). Wendell will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his "bride" of thirty-four years, Rebecca (Massey) Cultice; two sons, William W. (Kristine) Cultice, Burke, VA, and Curtice K. Cultice, Arlington, VA; a daughter, Jennifer G. Durrin, Shaker Heights, OH; three grandchildren, Kathryn (Scott) Malchow, London, England, Alyssa K. (Marshall) Malcolm, and William E. Cultice of Arlington, VA; several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Evelyn B. Stoops, Rachel N. Ary, Dorothy Morris, Beatrice P. Morris, Thelma L. Morris, and Patricia G. Cultice; nine brothers, James Winston Cultice, Henry D. Cultice, Lowell R. Cultice, Roger W. Cultice, Wayne M. Cultice, Russell L. Cultice, Marlin L. Cultice, Gerald E. Morris, and Donald E. Morris. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, April 22, at Faith Community United Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Dr., Xenia. Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30am, Saturday, prior to service.
